Fethiye

Steeped in history, the bustling town of Fethiye is home to some 170,000 people, and an increasing number of British ex-pats have settled here.

A Greek town until the poplulation exchange in 1923, the modern city is named after Captain Fethi Bey, one of the first pilots in the Ottoman Air Force

Thousands of years of history can be seen all round town. The free town museum is well worth a visit.

Pamukkale

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988, Pamukkale has served as a spa site for at least 2,200 years. Thousands of years on bubbling hot water springs have created a “white castle” of terraced travertine pools and one of the most spectacular landscapes you’ll find anywhere.

Hierapolis

Sitting alongside the stunning travertine pools is the ancient city of Heiropolis. Founded in the 2nd century bc, this is fabled to have been a favorite holiday resort of Anthony & Cloepatra!

Its a 3 hour drive from Fethiye, but well worth an overnight stop. Local hotels and restaurants are somewhat basic, but excellent value.

Xanthos – Letoon

Around an hours drive from Fethiye and close to Patara beach, the ancient Lycian capital city of Xanthos and it’s neighbour Letoon date back to the 8th century BC, and possibly earlier.

Tlos

Around a 30 minute drive, Tlos is one of the oldest and largest settlements of Lycian era. Subsequently inhabited by Romans, Byzantines and eventually Ottoman Turks, making it one of few Lycian cities to be continually inhabited up until the 19th century.

Dalyan

Once an important trading post, the ancient city of Kuanos and modern Dalyan are about an hours drive from Fethiye. Thousands of years of silt have built up and the ancient sea port is now inland from the beach.

Take a leisurely boat ride along the Dalyan river, past the ruined city of Kaunos, with Lycian rock tombs and the remains of a theater to İztuzu Beach, home to protected loggerhead turtle nesting grounds.
